Sermon speaking pace guide
Most preaching does not sound natural when it is rushed. A sermon often needs space for explanation, emphasis, Bible reading, and application. That is why your preaching pace matters so much when estimating sermon length.
Deliberate
About 105 to 120 words per minute. Useful for weightier topics, careful exposition, and slower delivery.
Moderate
About 120 to 140 words per minute. This is a helpful default for many sermons, messages, and Bible studies.
Conversational
About 140 to 155 words per minute. This can work well for lighter talks, teaching settings, or speakers who naturally move faster.
Choose a range, not a fantasy number
One exact time estimate can be misleading. A better sermon calculator gives a realistic range and lets you adjust the factors that matter. If you preach from an outline, include an off-script cushion. If you read long Scripture passages aloud, add that time separately. If you pause often for emphasis, build that into the estimate before Sunday morning.
